THE DANGERS

  • PAHs present high toxicological risks and numerous scientific studies demonstrated their immunotoxic, genotoxic and carcinogenic effects.

  • Some building materials can be an important source of PAHs in the air, especially during renovation or demolition work.

  • The main building materials that may contain high levels of PAHs are:
    • Road surfaces
    • Bituminous materials (e.g., waterproofing)
    • Wooden elements treated with preservatives (e.g., railway sleepers, posts, paving stones, etc.)
